Description:

An oil on canvas painting, signed "Blakelock" (notionally Ralph Albert Blakelock (1849-1919)) of a moonlit stream surrounded by trees. In the foreground there is a Native American encampment with canoes and teepees. These elements, along with the reflections of the moonlight on the water and the signature itself have been added to the work, almost certainly by a later, less talented hand. The underlying painting is a good 19th c Tonalists landscape, almost good enough to be by Blakelock himself. It is obscrubed by the later overpainting (which seems to have included strengthening the moon) and by an exceedingly uneven old coat or coats of varnish. 27.75" X 31.25"

  • Condition: All-over craquellure, some losses to paint surface. Several old repairs. Varnish was applied heavily and unevenly.
