Description:

Russell Hoban o/c Portrait of a Folk Singer. A large framed oil on canvas painting by writer, illustrator and artist Russell Hoban (1935-2011), who had several different careers across his lifetime. He started as a painter, which led to a career as an illustrator, including work for Sports Illustrated, a portrait of JD Salinger's Holden Caufield, and a famous 1962 portrait of Joan Baez commissioned for a Time magazine cover. He illustrated and published "What Is It and How Does It Work?". This shift led to a series of children's books featuring Frances the Badger. He then transitioned to writing for adults with the Riddley Walker series of books. In 1971, he published Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, which was later adapted for TV by Jim Henson. This portrait of an earnest, dark-haired man in a blue work shirt with an acoustic guitar, dates to 1949 and the earliest part of Hoban career. It's framed in an excellent, rustic frame made by the artist. Signed Hoban 49 lower left. Size: stretcher is 46" X 36", frame is 57" X 47.5". CONDITION: Vertical scratch about 6" long to the paint surface in the lower center. Painting is otherwise fine. Frame has some age-cracks to the wood.
