Description:

Robert Wilkinson Engraving of the Royal Exchange. A handsome engraving of the original building of the Royal Exchange, erected by Sir Thomas Gresham in 1571. This view shows the front facade (rather than the view from the courtyard) and the bell tower, as built. The engraving was published in 1819 by Robert Wilkinson for his Londina Illustrata, Graphic and Historic Memorials.; Text panels are in French and Dutch. The building is decorated with the Gresham grasshoppers. Sight is 11" X 8.25", frame is 15.75" X 13". Along with a 1795 engraving titled "Triumphant" from The Birth and Triumph of Love, showing a putto driving a chariot pulled by doves, likely after a wall painting at Pompeii, engraved by Peltro William Tomkins (from drawings by Princess Elizabeth), published by Tomkins. Sight is 10" X 7,.275", frame is 13.5" X 11.875". CONDITION: Royal Exchange has a couple of dark spots, otherwise apparently fine. "Triumphant" is slightly toned, otherwise apparently fine. Not examined out of frames.
